DEFINITION OF PARAGRAPH
A paragraph is a group of related sentences about a single topic. A topic sentence is a special sentence at the beginning of every paragraph that tells the reader what topic of the paragraph is (see p.3)
From the above statements, there is one important point to note. Besides being careful with the sentence structure, the students also have to be careful with main idea of each sentence. Main idea can be at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a paragraph. However, for the beginners, it's much easier to put the main idea at the beginning of a sentence instead. In addition, it should be remembered that each paragraph only consists of one main idea. The rest sentences are merely the description or explanation of the main ideas.
For example, if your main idea is: "My mother is a great cook", then the rest of your sentences in that paragraph should only cover the things that are relevant to the story of your mother being a great cook. You don't need to talk about her job as a secretary in a big company. You don't need to talk about Rudy Choiruddin's fame with his special recipes if it's not related to your mother's skill in cooking. However, if the case is that Rudy Choiruddin is your mother's biggest inspiration, then, of course, it's okay. So, please stick to your main idea in developing your supporting sentences.
