1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Writing-2 is a compulsory course and the prerequisite of Writing-3. It puts a greater emphasis on the ‘process’ of learning since it is focused on the students’ skill in English writing as the preparation for writing graduating paper as their final project.
This course is integrated-interconnected with some other courses such as Structure and Form-Based Vocabulary because the students need adequate knowledge about grammar and English vocabularies in order to express their ideas in paragraph, as well as courses related to courses of Islamic studies since the students can write paragraphs talking about Islamic issues.
During the course, the students are directed to write paragraph of academic writing with its three main components i.e. topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence. They are also to practice writing three basic types of paragraph. It develops the student’s cognitive competence at the taxonomy level of knowledge comprehension, and application.
2. COMPETENCY
COMPETENCY STANDARD
· At the end of the course, students are able to write effective paragraphs of academic writing consisting of topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence in three basic types namely time-order, space-order, and listing-order paragraph and composed of grammatically correct sentences with proportional sentence variety.
BASIC COMPETENCY
1. Students are able to identify the elements of good writing.
2. Students are able to make effective topic sentence (part of paragraph).
3. Students are able to make effective supporting sentences (part of paragraph).
4. Students are able to make effective concluding sentence (part of paragraph).
5. Students are able to write time-order paragraph (basic type of paragraph).
6. Students are able to write listing-order paragraph (basic type of paragraph).
7. Students are able to write space-order paragraph (basic type of paragraph).
INDICATOR
1. Elements of good writing
· The students are able to identify the elements of good writing.
2. Part of Paragraph: Topic Sentence
a. The students are able to identify the first part of paragraph: topic sentence.
b. The students are able to distinguish the three elements of a topic sentence.
c. The students are able to make effective topic sentence in which the controlling idea is not too broad or too specific.
3. Part of Paragraph: Supporting Sentences
a. The students are able to identify the second part of paragraph: supporting sentences.
b. The students are able to write supporting sentences which are coherent with the topic sentence.
4. Part of Paragraph: Concluding Sentence
a. The students are able to identify the third part of paragraph: concluding sentence.
b. The students are able to write concluding sentence which performs unity with the topic sentence and the supporting sentences.
5. Basic Type of Paragraph
a. The students are able to identify the pattern of time-order paragraph.
b. The students are able to write time-order paragraph with proper transition signals.
6. Basic Type of Paragraph
a. The students are able to identify the pattern of listing-order paragraph.
b. The students are able to write listing-order paragraph with proper transition signals.
7. Basic Type of Paragraph

5. DESCRIPTION
1. Active class participation: Q&A, solution (all in a free-risk environment).
2. Mid exam is written test covering the materials from the first meeting up to the first half of the semester.
3. Final exam is written test covering all the materials given throughout the semester.
4. Assignment includes completeness and accuracy.
6. LEARNING STRATEGY
To achieve the competencies targeted, this course applies two main strategis. First, a number of assignments which emphasize on the products, that is, making effective paragraph of academic writing individually. Second, the assignments which focus on the Active Learning strategy or student-centered Learning.
